The northern city of Kirkuk is located some 290 km (180 miles) north of Baghdad.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the incident.

Earlier on Monday, one police officer was killed when a group of armed men stormed a police checkpoint in the al-Midan region in central Mosul.

The United States launched its war on Iraq in 2003 under the pretext that the country possessed weapons of mass destruction. However, no such weapons have so far been found in the war-ravaged country.
