Chennai, December 09: Two persons have been arrested here for allegedly trying to smuggle red sanders and the Revenue Intelligence officials have confiscated from them nine tonnes of the wood, which is in high demand in countries like Japan and China.
The duo, whose identities were not revealed, had devised a plan to smuggle out red sanders in the name of regular exporters situated outside Tamil Nadu, using forged signatures, fake rubber stamps and fabricated Customs one time locks, a DRI release said today.
The officials got information about the racket when they recalled and examined yesterday an export container sent by the duo to Dubai in last week of October, the release said.
They found 339 logs of red sanders weighing over nine tonnes, valued at Rs 80 lakh in the international market, the release said.
