Two held for shooting at Kolkata policeman

Two people were arrested and sent to police custody till April 24 for shooting at a policeman during Saturday’s Kolkata Municipal Corporation polls, an officer said on Sunday.

Sub-inspector Jagannath Mondal, 55, took a bullet under his collarbone while trying to break up a political clash.

“Two people suspected to have fired at Mondal were arrested on Saturday night. Today (Sunday) they have been remanded to police custody till April 24 by a city court,” a police officer said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday paid a visit to Mondal at a city nursing home.

Praising the police for their efforts, Banerjee has called the KMC polls “peaceful like never before”.

Opposition parties — CPI-M led Left Front, the BJP and the Congress — have called the polls a “farce”, alleging widespread violence and strong-arm tactics by the ruling Trinamool.

The state election commission too expressed its dissatisfaction over the conduct of the polls.
