Sharjah, August 18: Two persons died and 33 were injured on Sunday night in a road accident in which four vehicles caught fire on the Sharjah Ring Road towards Ajman. The accident took place late night and held up traffic for more than three hours.
The Anjad patrol diverted the traffic from the scene where the two buses carrying construction workers and two cars were involved.
The civil defence team put out the fire and evacuated the passengers from the vehicles. Colonel Mohamed Eid Al Mazloum, Director of the Operations Department at Sharjah police said the accident victims were Asians.
Colonel Al Mazloum said, “The tragic accident resulted from motorists’ negligence and their reckless driving attitude. We are regularly urging motorist to abide by the speed limit while travelling on the inner and outer roads of the emirate. Driving on an empty road or a highway does not necessarily mean that a driver should drive at a very high speed. Over speeding leads to fatal accidents as drivers will find it very hard to have control over the drive wheel.”
He added, “Motorists must ensure they leave adequate space between them and the car in front of them. Sharjah Police is regularly urging motorists to abide by the stipulated speed limit while ensuring they are not wrongly overtaking other cars and that they should never engage in other chores while driving.”
