Two college students booked for ragging in Himachal

Shimla, July 16: Two students of Himachal Pradesh PG College have been booked for ragging their junior, the police said today.

Bilaspur Superintendent of Police Kuldeep Sharma told UNI on phone that a case of ragging has been registered in the Post Graduate College at Bilaspur town after a first-year student of a government college alleged that he was ragged by two seniors of the college along with two outsiders on last Monday. Offical said that soon after the incident, complainant Surya Chandel reported to the college principal regarding the ragging incident, who forwarded the complaint to the police.

On the basis of the complaint, the police have booked the four boys.

Mr Sharma said that a case has been registered under relevant sections of the anti-ragging ordinance.

The ordinace was promulgated recently in Himachal Pradesh after Aman Kachru’s death due to ragging at the Rajendra Prasad Medical College Tanda on March 8, 2009.

The ordinance makes ragging a cognisable, on-bailable offence compoundable with the permission of the court in the state likely to be take shape of regular Act in coming monsoon session starting from August 3.

Under the ordinance any student convicted of an offence would be punished with imprisonment up to three years or fine of up to Rs 50,000 or both.

However, police offical said that in prima facie it seems to be a case of clash among the students and not ragging. But the police is investigating the case.

College Principal Subhash Gupta told UNI that he mmediately forwarded the complaint to the police so that necessary action could be taken against the accused. He said that indiscipline would not be tolerated in the college.
