Two cases relating to tax default unearthed in Chennai

Chennai, March 24: The Income Tax (Investigation) Department here has unearthed two cases relating to tax defaults made by businessmen amounting to over Rs three crore.

During surveillance at the airport here, a person carrying gold bar weighing 8.34 kg from Chennai to Mumbai was interrogated. It was found that the gold bars were given to him by a Chennai-based jeweller, an I-T department release said today.

Unaccounted investments of Rs 1.76 crore were unearthed following inspection conducted at two business premises of the jeweller and it was found that the jeweller had not paid any advance tax, it said.

He admitted to the discrepancies and accepted to pay the tax immediately, it said.

In the second incident, an inspection at two premises of a banker financing small pawn brokers revealed that he had been evading tax.
