Two buildings collapse in Vadodara, five dead

At least five people are feared dead and over 35 trapped as two buildings collapsed here early on Wednesday.

The incident occurred behind Atlandara area around 4.30am when three-storey buildings came crashing down, catching the sleeping occupants unawares, HJ Tapariya, chief fire brigade officer of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation said. According to Tapariya, about 13 to 14 families were staying in the one of the buildings while the other was said to be vacant.

Relief and rescue teams have rushed to the spot. The buildings are located in a residential complex set up by the Vadodara Urban Development Authority.

The complex has 56 residential towers, two of which have collapsed.

Meanwhile, chief minister Narendra Modi tweeted to say that one of his ministers has also rushed to the site.

“Heard about the collapse of 2 buildings in Vadodara. Rescue operations have begun. My minister colleague Nitinbhai is on his way there,” Modi tweeted.
