Two associates of HuJI militant discharged

New Delhi, January 07: In an embarrassment to the Delhi police, a special court today discharged two associates of a suspected HuJI militant for lack of evidence of waging war against the country and other offences.

Additional Sessions Judge K S Mohi let off Jalaluddin alias Babu Bhai, who was also allegedly involved in bomb blasts at Varanasi in 2006. The other person discharged was Nazrul Islam.

Both Jalaluddin and Nazrul were arrested in 2008 by the Delhi police’s Special Cell on the disclosure statement of Mohd Iqbal, a suspected militant of Bangladesh-based Harkat-ul-Jehad Islami (HuJI).

The court allowed the contention of defence counsel M S Khan, who submitted that the police had failed to link the two accused with Iqbal.

“The investigating agency arrested the two merely on the disclosure statement of Iqbal, which is not admissible under Section 25 of the Indian Evidence Act,” Khan argued.
