Two arrested for running betting racket

New Delhi: Two persons have been arrested for allegedly running a cricket betting racket and taking bets on on the India-New Zealand Test match being played in Kolkata, police said today.

Acting on a tip off, police arrested Manish Sharma and Yadram yesterday from in northeast Delhi’s New Usmanpur.

“Receiving information about a betting racket being operated by Sharma and Yadram, a team under SHO New Usmanpur was formed and a room in Brahmpuri was raided. The duo were arrested and Rs 17,300 in cash, eight mobile phones, one laptop calculators and registers were recovered from them,” a senior police officer said.

There was also a TV set in the room and the duo was monitoring ball-by-ball details of two matches–India vs New Zealand Test match and Australia vs South Africa ODI match, police said.

Australia lost to South Africa by 142 runs yesterday while India won the Test match against New Zealand today.

“They were feeding the information in the laptop and also monitoring the online betting rates while their phones were constantly ringing with people calling in to place bets,” DCP (Northeast) Ajit Kumar Singla said.

One of the phones was also playing the live commentary of the match, police said.

“We have seized Rs 17,300 cash, eight mobile phones and one laptop from the duo. Further investigation is underway,” he said.

Police is suspecting the involvement of people from other states in the betting racket.

Police also conducted raids in other areas in New Usmanpur and Seelampur where gambling was going on and 26 people have been arrested, said Singla.
