Two Arrested for Offering Bribes to Health Inspector

Ajman, July 21: The police have arrested two men for allegedly offering bribes worth Dh5,000 to an Ajman Municipality health inspector for not fining them for stocking containers of honey whose expiry dates were over.

Khalid Al Hosany, Director of the Public Health Department at the municipality, said that on July 15, a health inspector assigned to inspect warehouses in Al Bustan area found a warehouse with many containers of honey exposed to direct sunlight. The expiry dates of the stock were over. “The inspector found out that the owner was selling the stock in the market as pure bee honey,” he added.

The warehouse next to the first one also had expired stocks of honey.

When asked for the licences, a worker looking after these warehouses could not produce them. The inspector found out they did not have licences.

One of the Asians offered the inspector Dh3,000 to ensure that the latter did not report the violations. He also offered to pay more when the owner of the other warehouse also arrived.

The inspector pretended to have agreed to the deal. “The inspector immediately contacted the health department and the police. Both Asians were arrested while Dh2,000 more was handed over to the inspector,” Al Hosany said. A top officer of Ajman Police said the two confessed to offering the bribe to the inspector and were referred to the Public Prosecution.
