Kanpur, July 18: Two persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in kidnapping and murdering a 13-year-old boy nine days ago. Two cousin brothers Jaikishan Awasthi and Ankit Awasthi were arrested late last night from the Rail Bazaar area of the city, Senior Superintendent of Police, Cantt area, Dharmendra Singh, said, adding however, another accomplice Abhishek Awasthi is still absconding.
Police have also recovered the two-wheeler used in the kidnapping and the bag in which the boy”s parents had paid Rs 2 lakh ransom to the men, he said. The police was keeping a track on the kidnappers through mobile surveillance, Singh said.
After being interrogated, the two brothers told the police that they had divided the ransom money amongst themselves and bought a TV and a motorcycle. On July nine, 13-year-old Karan Maheshwari went missing from outside his Kidwai Nagar residence.
However, his family did not report the matter to the local police and instead approached the Special Task Force (STF). SSP Dharmendra Singh said that the city police was informed of the incidence on July 11 and they immediately swung into action.
Karan”s father Pawan Maheshwari, who was contacted by the kidnappers, claimed to have given Rs 2 lakh as ransom to them on July nine. However, his body was recovered on the morning of July 12 from Gangaghat area by Unnao police, which later informed Kanpur police.
