Two Army jawans injured during grenade trial

Jabalpur: Two Army jawans were injured, one of them severely, during the trial of a multi-mode hand- grenade (MMHG) manufactured by a private comapny at the testing range of Jammu and Kashmir Rifles here yesterday.

The hand-grenade, when thrown during testing, went off quicker than the actual time it was supposed to take to explode, said Colonel B P Singh, PRO of Madhya Bharat Area of Central Command of Army.

Both the jawans were admitted to the military hospital.

One of them had sustained grievous injuries and was operated upon, Colonel Singh added.

The MMHG was supposed to explode four seconds after it was hurled, but it went off before time, initial probe suggested. A court of inquiry (COI) had been ordered, the PRO said.

The MMHG under testing was manufactured by a Nagpur-based private company, Colonel Singh said, adding that the trials were stopped after the mishap.
