Twin blasts near peace meet in Kabul

Kabul, June 02: Two blasts have been heard in Kabul as Afghan President Hamid Karzai was speaking at the opening of a long-delayed peace meeting known as “jirga”.

Around 1,600 participants are expected to show up in Kabul for the three-day gathering of the tribal assembly which kicked off on Wednesday. The issue of making peace with the Taliban is scheduled to top the agenda of the meeting.

The blast comes as earlier on Tuesday, Taliban militants in Afghanistan turned down an offer by President Karzai to attend the national peace conference in the Afghan capital of Kabul.

The Taliban argued that the scheduled meeting lacked any credibility as long as foreign troops remained in Afghanistan.

There have been no reports of damage so far.
