Turnout huge for Law but low for PG, MCA exams

Hyderabad, Janaury 22: On the second day of Osmania University examinations the attendance for the PG and MCA examinations witnessed a further dip with less than 15 per cent each appearing for both the examinations. The attendance for the law examinations, however, was huge with more than 72 per cent appearing.

The examination boycott call was given by the OU Joint Action Committee (OUJAC) demanding introduction of a bill on separate Telangana state in Parliament.

Like yesterday, not a single student of the OU and its four constituent colleges _ Koti Women’s college, Nizam college and PG colleges at Saifabad and Secunderabad _ appeared for the examinations. The boycott call received good response from students in Nalgonda and Mahaboobnagar districts with students tearing up the hall-tickets in front of the examination centres and raising slogans demanding separate Telangana state. The overall attendance in districts is a meagre 0.4 per cent, OU authorities said.

According to OU authorities, only 14.3 per cent appeared for the first-year first semester examinations for PG courses like MA MSc and MCom, and 14.9 per cent for the MCA first-year examinations. The LLB five-year course examinations were held today and 72.4 per cent students appeared for the examinations.

Meanwhile, the authorities shifted the examination centre at Andhra Mahila Sabha located on the OU campus to the Hindi Mahavidyalaya at Vidya Nagar to ensure that OU students did not obstruct the process of examination. Though the turnout at the examination centre was good for the examination conducted in the morning, just fewer than 10 students appeared for the afternoon examination.

According to officials, of the 11,058 registered candidates for PG examinations only 1,592 appeared. Of the 5,396 MCA students, 803 took the examination while 294 of the 406 LLB candidates appeared for the examination. Meanwhile, OUJAC students sent more than 500 letters addressed to governor ESL Narasimhan, urging him not to send ‘adverse’ reports to the Centre on the situation in the region.

OUJAC threatens to storm Raj Bhavan

The OU Joint Action Committee (independent) group today warned of storming the Raj Bhavan if governor ESL Narasimhan is not recalled immediately for giving adverse reports to the Centre on the situation in Telangana and particularly the OU campus.

The OUJAC today took out a rally with the effigy of the governor and later held a students court at the Arts College. The OUJAC leaders alleged that the governor gave an assurance to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and AICC president Sonia Gandhi to suppress the Telangana movement. They alleged that the government is converting the examination centres into police stations and are conducting examinations.
