A Tunisian member of the Ukrainian feminist group Femen was fined for the pepper spray charge, the official TAP press agency reported Friday.
Amina Sboui, known by her pseudonym Tyler, appeared in court in the Tunisian holy city of Kairouan on Thursday. She was sentenced to pay 300 dinar (about 200 U.S. dollars) fine on the charge of illegal possession of pepper spray.
The 19-year-old activist, who triggered controversy in Tunisia two months ago by posting topless pictures of herself online, was remanded in custody and will go on trial for two other charges on June 5.
Earlier this month, she was arrested by police after painting the word “Femen” on a wall near the main mosque of Kairouan.
On Wednesday, three European Femen activists stood topless before the Tunisian justice ministry in the capital of Tunis, brandishing slogans reading “Free Amina” and “Breastfeed Revolution.” They were arrested and remain in custody before they are brought to trial. (Xinhua-ANI)
