Tsunami alert has coastal region on its toes

Hyderabad, May 10: A powerful earthquake in an Indonesian province sent jitters along the Andhra Pradesh coast on Sunday. Fearing a tsunami, collectors of the respective districts directed officials and police to warn fishermen and clear the sea shore.

Visitors and tourists to the beaches were told to return home and fishermen already on the high seas were advised to return. The officials set up control rooms at the collectorates and issued alerts.
People along the 193-km coastline in Srikakulam district had been alerted and 21 low-lying villages had been asked to be ready to move out.
The government advised the district collectors of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari and West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore to take appropriate measures and keep it informed.
Chief Secretary SV Prasad briefed Chief Minister K Rosaiah who was on a tour in Guntur district.

Powerful quake jolts Aceh A powerful quake with a magnitude of at least 7.4 hit the Indonesian province of Aceh on Sunday, causing panic in an area that was devastated by the killer waves of the 2004 Tsunami. Coastal residents fled from their homes and headed inland fearing a destructive tsunami but officials said no casualties were reported.
The quake hit at 10:89 IST, 66 km, southwest of Meulaboh on the Aceh coast on the island of Sumatra.
