Hyderabad: More than 3,000 people were booked for drunk driving on New Year’s Eve in Telangana (3148). The breakdown of cases by district is as follows: Hyderabad (951), Cyberabad (873), Rachakonda (281), Nalgonda (152), Karimnagar (148), Warangal (116), Siddipet (99), Jagital (71), Nizamabad (65), Rajanna Sircilla (48), Bhadradri Kothagudem (47), Ramagundam (43), Sangareddy (36), Mahabubnagar (30), Medak (17), Bhupalpally (16), Adilabad (15), Khammam (14), Asifabad (14), Wanaparthy (12), Gadwal (10), Suryapet (9), Vikarabad (9), Nagarkurnool (7), Kamareddy (7), Mulugu (6) and Narayanapet (1).
These figures are from the Telangana State Police report that contains details of such cases registered to start from 10 pm on December 31, 2019, till 8 am January 1, 2020.
This year 3148 cases were reported in the entire state while last year Hyderabad city reported higher cases amounting to 2091. Thousands of traffic police personnel were deployed across Telangana on New Year’s Eve to ensure safety and check drink driving.
In the police’s push against drunk and drive, 951 from Hyderabad, 873 from Cyberabad, 281 from Rachakonda people were caught driving under the influence of alcohol on New Year’s Eve 2020. This crackdown began around 10 pm on Tuesday and went on till 8 am in the city’s three comissionerates.
In Hyderabad, drunken driving checks were conducted on main thoroughfares especially in areas like Mehdipatnam, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Madhapur, Hi-tech City, Narayanguda, Himayatnagar, and LB Nagar.
At 25 checkpoints, 748 revellers — mostly youngsters between the ages 18 to 25 — were booked for driving in an intoxicated state in the three comissionerates limits as per the officials of those three jurisdictions.
The Cyberabad police seized 631 two-wheelers, 219 four-wheelers, and 17 three-wheelers. The Rachakonda police have also seized 211 two-wheelers, 55 and four-wheelers.
“To ensure safety to citizens, we have set up special drunk driving checkpoints at many places. Special police forces were deployed to look out for tipplers,” Hyderabad City Police Commissioner, Anjani Kumar said.
The Rachakonda traffic police caught 281 offenders during this drive at Malkajgiri, Kushaiguda, Uppal, Choutuppal, LB Nagar, Vanasthalipuram and Bhongir.
The Rachakonda Police had set up a checkpoint along the major roads and highways to check for drunk drivers. After seizing the vehicles, the offenders were allowed to leave. However, the offenders were fined Rs. 10,000, asked to attend a counseling session at the Traffic Training Institutes in the city and then appear in court.
In the Cyberabad police commissionerate limits, people were caught by traffic police during the checks at Madhapur, Gachibowli, Shamshabad, Alwal, Balanagar and other places under its jurisdiction.
The highest number of inebriated motorists (951) was caught in Hyderabad followed by 873 in the Cyberabad region.
Meanwhile, the seized two-wheelers and four-wheelers filled the parking lots of traffic police stations in the three commissionerates. Last year, the traffic police of three commissionerates had caught 2,499 people during similar checks on the previous year’s celebrations.
