The court order the Govt. to submit a plan of action in this regard within four weeks.
The court expressed surprise as to why did the Govt. fail to implement this scheme whereas the governments of Gujarat and Rajasthan were successful in cleaning Sabarmati and Pravyavati rivers.
The Court observed that River Musi has become the breeding ground for the mosquitoes. The judges also remarked that God only knows how much health hazards this river has caused to people.
The two-member High Court bench comprising Chief Justice of Telangana High Court, Justice Raghavender Singh Chauhan and Justice Abhishek Reddy was hearing a Public Interest Litigation petition which was filed by Mr. G. Ramnath Karunakar.
The court also took cognizance of the reports published in the press expressing anxiety overt the health hazards due to River Musi.
The judge observed that nothing has been done to clean River Musi whereas the most polluted river which passes through Jalpur was cleaned by Govt. of Rajasthan.
In the same manner, River Sabarmati which passes though the state of Gujarat was cleaned and why can’t the Govt. of TS take step to clean River Musi, the judge observed.
The High Court bench did not accept the arguments put forth by the Govt pleader, Mr. Sharat Kamar.
Mr. Sharat Kumar had pleaded that Govt. of T.S. is helpless due to the pending cases in which the court passed orders to maintain ‘Status Quo’ in respect of the illegal occupants of the river premises.
The Judges further told the Govt. pleader that it is only a lame pretext under which you can’t be inactive since a major portion of the river is free from encumbrances.
The judges also pointed out that they are awaiting the action to be taken by the chairman of the Musi River development Authority who had claimed that River Musi would be cleaned within three months.
The judges remarked that Hussain Sagar Lake looks beautiful but in fact, it is the most polluted water body.
