Washington: US President Donald Trump has launched a fresh attack on Barack Obama’s administration, claiming he was responsible for releasing 122 “vicious prisoners” from Guantanamo Bay, who have since re-engaged in terrorism.
“122 vicious prisoners, released by the Obama Administration from Gitmo, have returned to the battlefield. Just another terrible decision!” he wrote on Twitter on Tuesday morning.
However, the President’s tweet was inaccurate as US intelligence data revealed it is former President George W. Bush who freed nearly all of the prisoners Trump wrote about, reported New York Daily News.
According to a report on re-engagement through July 2016, 122 of the 693 former detainees who were transferred out of Gitmo went back to terrorism.
Bush oversaw the release of 532 detainees, and 113 of them – more than one-fifth – were confirmed to have re-engaged, according to the report.
Meanwhile, Obama released 161 detainees, and only nine were confirmed to have returned to terrorism.
Trump also took aim at ObamaCare calling it “a complete and total disaster” which is “imploding fast”.
The President’s new claim continues his public feud with Obama over alleged wrongdoings that Trump cannot prove, said the report.
Trump fired off a weekend tweetstorm accusing Obama, with no evidence, of ordering wiretapping on him before the election.
However, Obama denied the accusation and FBI Director James Comey pleaded with the Justice Department to publicly refute Trump’s claim.
Trump also tweeted his thoughts on Obama’s position on Russia, writing, “For eight years Russia “ran over” President Obama, got stronger and stronger, picked-off Crimea and added missiles. Weak!”
