TRS wants Telangana doctor as NIMS director

Hyderabad, September 23: TRS deputy leader in the Assembly T Harish Rao on Wednesday warned the government of agitation if no doctor from Telangana is posted as director of Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS).

As the present director’s term is coming to an end, a search committee has been constituted but going by the past experience, it is likely that this time too a doctor from Andhra region might be posted and hence the warning, Rao told newsmen here.

Rao said of the 26 HoDs in the NIMS, only two doctors were from Telangana. In any case no Telangana doctor would be nominated as director for either SVIMS, Tirupati or RIMS, Kadapa.

At least in NIMS, located in Hyderabad, should have a Telangana doctor as its director this time, he said.

The TRS leader said since the inception of NTR University of Health Sciences, no Telanganite secured jobs.

Of the 110 posts in the university, only two posts, that too those of attenders, were given to Telangana, he said and demanded that the university should be split into three units and one branch should be located in Telangana region.

As the university’s executive council is scheduled to meet tomorrow to extend the term of the registrar for another three months, the TRS wanted the government to appoint a Telanganite to the post instead of giving an extension to the present registrar.

He said even in Gandhi and Osmania Medical Colleges in Hyderabad, 70 per cent of the professors and assistant professors were from Andhra re gion.

Though medical education minister P Sudarshan Reddy is from Nizamabad, he was more worried over how to protect his position rather than taking care of the interests of the Telangana people, he said.
