Telangana Rashtra Samithi ( TRS) leader K. Kavitha on Monday blamed the engineers in-charge of the Laarji Dam on the River Beas for the deaths of 24 students due to flash floods, and demanded strict action against them.
“It is an unfortunate incident that happened in Himachal Pradesh. It was due to the negligence of a few engineers who did not alert the people regarding the release of water, and the they (students) died,” said Kavitha.
“We demand strict action against the engineers by the Himachal Pradesh chief minister,” she added.
She expressed her condolences and said the Telangana Government is actively monitoring the situation and is working for the families of the students.
So far, five bodies, including the bodies of two girls and a boy, have been recovered from the River Beas.
The flash floods washed away 25 people in Mandi yesterday. They included 24 students of Hyderabad’s VNR Vigyan Jyoti College and a tour manager.
The flash flood on the River Beas has been attributed to the release of water from the Laarji Hydropower project. (ANI)
