Agartala, September 01: Tripura Assembly today unanimously resolved to send an all party delegation to Delhi for convincing the Centre to set up a separate High Court for the state.
Replying to a notice brought by ruling CPI(M), MLA , Pabitra Kar, Chief Minister, Manik Sarkar said, before the princely Tripura joined India on October 15, 1949 there was a judicial commission court in the state which was equivalent to a High Court.
In 1987, then Union Law Minister, had informed all the Governors of the North Eastern states that separate High Courts would be set up in all the North Eastern states and on September 10, last year a delegation of the lawyers of the state met Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, who reportedly assured the delegation to see the matter, he said.
The chief minister said last year he wrote a letter to the then Union Law Minister, H R Bhardwaj, who in reply said that constitution amendment is necessary for setting up new High Courts and the Home Ministry was asked to do the needful.
The assembly unanimously decided that an all party delegation would go to Delhi and meet the Prime Minister and Union Law Minister to seek the setting up a High Court in the state as early as possible.
