Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu unit of BJP today refuted charges by some political parties that the Centre is trying to lay hands on laws affecting religious freedom and rights, saying triple talaq is seriously affecting freedom and rights of women.
“Triple Talaq, which is not practised even in Islamic countries, is seriously affecting the freedom and rights of women,” state party chief Tamilisai Soundararajan told reporters here.
She demanded to know why political parties and organisations which raise a hue and cry on petty issues related to women, were keeping quiet on the talaq issue.
Asked about the all party meet convened by DMK on October 25 to discuss the cauvery issue, she said it would not yield any result.
DMK should instead exert pressure on its ally Congress and prevail upon its government in Karnataka to ensure the release of 2,000 TMC of water as directed by the Supreme Court, she said.
About the November 19 polls of three assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu, the BJP leader asked why the four-party People’s Welfare Front, particularly MDMK General secretary Vaiko who claimed to have people’s support, was scared of contesting.
However, Tamilsai said it will not not have any impact on the poll outcome.
