Tribal woman gang-raped by 14 in Orissa

Parvathipuram, September 14: A tribal woman was gang-raped by 14 in Orissa on Friday night but the incident came to light only on Sunday after the victim lodged a complaint with the Parvathipuram police.

According to police, the outrage took place at Jadaba in Badhugaon block of Koraput district, Orissa. The victim first lodged a complaint with the Bandhugoan police in Orissa, but when they did not take any action, she came to Parvathipuram.

An active member in the Rythu Coolie Sangham, she, along with the other workers, attacked an arrack making unit in Jadaba village recently.
After this, the tribals, who were making arrack illegally, shifted to a place in Orissa near Kunthesu in Komarada mandal, Viziangaram district. The woman and her co-workers tried to destroy that unit too on Friday.
Furious over their interference, the men, who are preparing arrack, retaliated.

All but the woman managed to escape from the scene. The tribals overpowered her and after making her immobile, outraged her modesty. According to Parvathipuram ASP A Ravikrishna, a case has been registered under Section 376 of the IPC.

However, as the place of assault does not come under the Andhra Pradesh police jurisdiction, the department has to take a decision whether it has to be transferred to Orissa, the police official said, adding that they would get in touch with their counterparts in the neighbouring State.
