Adilabad, November 11: A Class IX student of a tribal welfare residential school committed suicide at Utnoor mandal headquarters on Monday night prompting the authorities to suspend the hostel warden, headmistress and a watchman.
Chawhan Bindu (14), daughter of a farmer from the tribal village of Mamidipalli in Jainoor mandal, jumped into the hostel well. What drove her to the extreme step remains a mystery.
According to Utnoor DSP Bhumaiah, Bindu had been staying in the hostel for the past three years. A day before her death, the girl’s mother met her at the hostel and both of them reportedly cried and consoled each other over some domestic issue.
The body was fished out of the well and sent for post-mortem on Tuesday. The police registered a case following a complaint by the bereaved family. The girl’s relatives staged a demonstration during the day and demanded swift action against the hostel staff. They also wanted an ex gratia of Rs five lakh and a job for one of the family members. Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) project officer Samuel Anand Kumar promised action and immediately placed hostel warden Satyavati, headmistress Laxmi Kumari and watchman Satyamma under suspension. He also ordered an inquiry into the incident.
