Train kills woman talking on mobile

Bangalore, June 10: A 36-year-old woman, who tried to cross a railway line while talking on her mobile phone using earphones, was run over by a train in Bangalore on Wednesday.

The deceased woman has been identified as A Anita, wife of Alen, a resident of Begur. The accident took place in Bayappanahalli railway police limits at around 8:45 in the morning, when Anita was on her way to work at a nursery near Marathhalli Bridge.

Anita was talking over her mobile with earphones attached, when a push-pull train crushed her to death, the Bayappanahalli railway police said. Anita did not hear the sound of the train as the engine of push-pull trains are in the middle of the train, rather than the front, railway police said. She died on the spot after sustaining serious head injuries, the railway police said.

A similar incident was reported some time back from Kammagondanahally near Jalahalli, when a man named Sanjay Kumar had a miraculous escape. He was crossing the track listening to music on his mobile phone and just missed being hit by a passing train. Kumar fell unconscious on the track and sustained back injuries.

At first, it was believed that Anita was hearing music over her i-pod and that this led to the accident. Investigation revealed that she was talking on her mobile phone. Anita is survived by her husband and two children, aged 15 and 13.
