”Trafficop” helping trace vehicle owners

Mumbai, February 18: Trafficop, the computerised system being used by Pune traffic police department to trace vehicles, has helped identify owners of over 300 vehicles lying abandoned at police stations and traffic offices.

“The system has helped us trace vehicle owners using the vehicles” registration, engine and chassis numbers,” Pune”s Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) Manoj Patil told. The project, launched two months ago, is helping police find out the name and addresses of vehicle owners by entering the registration number in their Blackberry handsets.

“Earlier, while enforcing the traffic laws, officers took action against offenders presuming they are committing the offence for the first time as no record of their previous offence was available to him on the spot,” he said. “However, with Trafficop, before accepting the compounding fees for a violation, the police officer can verify the history of the offences of the vehicle and driver after making a query to the server, and central data base through GPRS,” Patil said.

Under the Trafficop project, which was developed along with Pune-based Science and Technology Park, a Blackberry mobile handset and a blue tooth dot matrix printer is given to the traffic officer. .
