Traffic management plan to be prepared: Metro Rail

Hyderabad, May 02: In the context of Metro Rail works to be grounded in the next few weeks, a meeting of the Traffic Coordination Committee was held by Hyderabad Metro Rail MD NVS Reddy and Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) CV Anand on Saturday. The Committee consists of senior officials of Hyderabad and Cyberabad Police Commissionrates, GHMC, Metro Water Board, APCPDCL, R and B, NH and Land T HMR MD NVS Reddy has informed the officials that as directed by Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, a Traffic Management Plan is being prepared by HMR and Land T in order to minimize inconvenience to the road users during Metro Rail construction phase.

For this purpose, it is decided that about 60 per cent of the alignment related works like piers and viaduct and about 70 per cent of the station works at 63 locations will be done off-site with the latest precast segmental construction techniques and precast building methods.

Only 40 per cent of the alignment works and 30 per cent of the stations works will be done on-site. He has further mentioned that concentration will be on long lead critical activities like depot works and casting yards and that the corridor works will be initially confined to the stretches of Nagole – Mettuguda on Corridor-III and Miyapur – Ameerpet on Corridor-I, where the roads are wide.

LEA Associates, the traffic consultants for HMR, has made a presentation on the proposed improvements for junctions of Uppal, Habsiguda, Tarnaka, Mettuguda, Alugadda Bavi, Chilkalguda and Rathifile on the Nagole – Secunderabad Railway station stretch and for all the junctions between Miyapur and Punjagutta.

The suggested junction improvements mainly include creation of kidney islands and traffic channelisers, reduction/removal of rotaries, signalization and signal improvements, reduction of intersection distances, traffic lane marking, pedestrian facilities, etc.

HMR and GHMC will undertake these junction improvement works on priority basis in coordination with Traffic police. The Traffic consultants for Land T, Sky Line Archon Pvt Ltd, have made a detailed presentation on the Traffic Management plan for the two identified corridor stretches and suggested different measures like paving of unpaved shoulders and roads, creation of additional lanes from behind the obstructing structures, creation of service roads and parallel roads, removal of encroachments, etc.

They have identified a number of alternative routes for partial diversion of traffic with leveling and paving of uneven colony roads, removal of obstacles, etc. They have also indicated traffic enforcement measures to be adopted by Traffic police and deployment of traffic marshals.

Responding to the suggestions of the Traffic experts, Mr CV Anand has asked the Traffic police to examine the proposals and give inputs with their practical experience. He has also advised L and T officials and the Traffic consultants to closely interact with Traffic police right from the initial planning stage for pragmatic inputs and smooth implementation of the Traffic Management Plan. …2 -2- Expressing concern over the difficulties in carrying out metro rail works during the coming monsoon period.

Mr NVS Reddy has requested GHMC and Water Board officials to take special care of the usual water stagnation points on these stretches with creation and effective cleaning of catch pits, nalas and other storm water/sewerage drain facilities.

The Committee has decided to go for frequent field inspections of the road stretches slated for construction activities and the first inspection is scheduled for the 3rd of May.

It has also been decided to mark the pier locations on the ground so as to initiate underground utilities identification and shifting exercise soon.
