Hyderabad, July 13: The traffic situation in the Twin Cities is worsening with each passing day but the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) continues to sit on a proposal to widen 109 roads in different parts of the city.
This, despite the Hyderabad traffic police sending a proposal more than two months ago.
The important roads that were identified for widening are Patny Crossroads leading up to Manju theatre, YMCA Crossroads to Garden Hotel road, Erramanzil to Punjagutta, Chilkalguda Shiva Hotel to the Arts College railway station, Bowenpally checkpost to CTO, Tadbund Crossroads to Mallareddy Garden, Secunderabad Club to AOC.
As part of the proposal, the road between Narayanguda and Taj Mahal junction was proposed to be widened by 18 metre on either side. The existing road width is 80 feet.
Similarly, between Taj Mahal junction and Bank Street in Koti, the road was to be widened by 30 metre. The forever cramped Ek Minar Road was to be widened by 30 metre on both sides.
Traffic police had prepared the proposal after conducting a study of important roads and its width under all police stations.
But it is learnt that municipal authorities are just letting the matter stew.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) N V Surendra Babu said there is urgent need to develop alternative roads for important locations.
According to him, the connecting road between Ek Minar and Lakdika- pul via Niloufer Hospital has to be improved, so that motorists coming from Nampally can avoid using the narrow Lakdi-ka-Pul bridge, where traffic jams are a common feature.
Similarly, the development of First Lancer Road that connects directly to Banjara Hills Road No. 12 will help motorists coming from Mehdipatnam avoid the Masab Tank road.
“There are many routes in the city that can be improved to ease the traffic in the city,” said Surendra Babu.
But police said there are more than 50 religious structures existing on the proposed roads where widening has to be taken up.
Lakdi-ka-Pul, being the main problematic junction, Traffic Police suggested a flyover from Saifabad police station to Ranga Reddy Collectorate via Nirankari junction, besides the much awaited Railway Over Bridge (ROB).
Traffic police officials expressed concern that though papers were moving from one department to the other, works had not been taken up.
