Gone are the days where traditional Brahmin families enjoyed highest respect and the youth who embraced traditional occupation of a purohit (priest) studying Vedas did not have any problem in getting suitable bride among their community.
Now, with modern education system, especially computer education, has reversed this.
‘Despite changing in tune with the times both in attire and habits, setting aside the shackles of tradition and superstitions to a major extent, the Brahmin youths who chosn the purohits’ job as the traditional occupation, are not able to get suitable brides,’ said Mr Prabhala Subrahmanyam, Founder-President of the Gayatri Seva Trust which is now engaged in serving the Brahmin community by way of rendering free service in arranging marriage alliances. The reason is Brahmin girls are now educated, mostly became computer engineers and prefer only software engineers as their life partner.
The result is purohit bridegrooms are becoming overage by the time they enter into wedlock.
Similar is the case with all computer software engineers–both boys and girls–as employment abroad with lucrative pay package is the criteria for choosing the life partner, he said. The trust provided required assistance to the needy poor Brahmins in securing admissions in educational institutions, government pensions and house sites. UNI
