Tough laws mooted to check crime against women

Hyderabad, November 09: Women Development and Child Welfare Minister V Sunita Lakshma Reddy emphasised on the need for coordinated effort by various departments involved in the rescue and rehabilitation of women, children and destitute persons. She was speaking at a two-day State level workshop jointly organised by State Government and the Railway Police at the Dr MCR HRD Institute here on Tuesday.

The Minister assured that the government would adopt the suggestions and recommendations made in the ongoing workshop. She also said that changes and amendments should be made to the Acts so that stringent action is taken on the offenders to check atrocities on Women and Children. Poor and destitute Women and Children should be taught vocational skills and make them economically independent, she said.

Sunita Reddy requested the Director General of Police V Dinesh Reddy to look into pending cases booked against women and children and see that they are cleared on priority basis. She also asked him to post women constables in all the police stations.

Speaking on the occasion, Dinesh Reddy said that the Railway Police have an active role to play in identifying the runaway children and women and hand them over to the concerned authorities. He asked the police personnel to empathise with the aged persons and take utmost care in solving their problems. He also informed that two monitoring cells have been working each for children and women at State Level. He said that suggestions given by the workshop would be incorporated in redressal of the problems of runaway children and women.

Special Chief Secretary of Women Development and Child Welfare department M Chaya Ratan said that children and women issues should be addressed with more compassion and open approach. The curriculum for Training Schedules for Police and other departments should necessarily be included with measures to deal with destitute Women and Children so that they are aware of the problems. The Police should change their attitude towards poor and destitute, she said.

Addl DGPs SV Ramana Murthy and VSK Kaumudi and other senior officials participated in the workshop.
