New Delhi, April 12: Uttar Pradesh tops the list of states from where maximum number of complaints have been received by the NCW since its inception, followed by Delhi.
Official figures also show that 2007 saw the highest number of complaints being received by the women’s panel in a year — 15,999. Last year, the National Commission for Women got 15,700 complaints while the number was 14,233 in 2009.
According to statistics, the commission, which was established in 1992, got 27,435 complaints from UP so far, followed by Delhi (7,452), Rajasthan (4,206), Haryana (2,683) and Madhya Pradesh (2,067).
Complaints are lodged under 33 heads in the Commission, including dowry death, harassment, police inaction, rape, acid attack and problems related to NRI marriages. Online registration of complaints was started in 2005 after which the number of cases has increased considerably.
