Top Vizag doctor held in illegal kidney racket

A kidney racket has been busted in Visakhapatnam and the Director of a hospital has been arrested in connection with the case. The Odisha Police arrested Seven Hills Hospitals director Dr N Prabhakar Babu after his hospital allegedly carried out a kidney transplant without following rules.

However, the police were not able to take the accused into custody as he had fallen sick. The case is about a woman donating her kidney to a man in Bhubaneshwar for Rs 10 lakh.

During investigations, the police discovered that all documents were forged as the donor and the recipient were unrelated and the transplant was performed at the Seven Hills Hospital.

The Odisha police has charged Babu under Sections 18, 32 and 120 (transplantation of human organs and tissues) of the Indian Penal Code.

However, the Seven Hills Hospital management addressed a press conference stating that the kidney transplant was conducted as usual, based on documents submitted by a chronic kidney failure patient Mohan Lenka, which stated that the kidney donor is his wife. “We believed that Mohan Lenka’s documents were genuine and proceeded with the kidney transplant. Lenka underwent a kidney transplant on April 4 this year and he was discharged on April 10 from the Seven Hills Hospital,” the hospital management said.

Seven Hills Hospital’s doctor Kuchala Rao, urologist Amit Saply and nephrologist Ravi Shankar told reporters today that they accepted relevant documents including ration card, submitted by the patient at face value. “We are not equipped to establish the veracity of these documents. The Odisha police said that these documents were forged and the director was accused of forgery. Despite working to the best of our abilities, we are being accused of having bad intentions,” they said.
