Tokyo shares open lower

Tokyo: Tokyo shares opened lower on Thursday as the US stocks retreated for the first time in eight trading days.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 72.17 points, or 0.40 per cent, from Wednesday to 17,790.04, Xinhua news agency reported.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 6.65 points, or 0.47 percent, at 1,415.00.

Decliners were led by insurance, bank and securities issues.
