Villupuram (Tamil Nadu) : A primary school teacher in Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram district has been arrested, for allegedly placing burning camphor on the feet of students of classes IV and V as punishment for poor academic performance.
A local court has sent the teacher, Vyjayantimala, to judicial custody till June 24.
According to reports, she had allegedly placed camphor on the feet of 15 students and set fire to it as a punishment on Thursday after the children were found to be inattentive in the classroom.
The education department suspended Vyjayantimala and headmaster Varadarajan of the panchayat union primary school on Friday.
After hearing about the shocking incident from their wards, agitated parents reportedly surrounded the school and staged a protest against the barbaric act of the teacher. (ANI)
