TN: Chennai High Court has maximum women Judges in the nation

Chennai: Tamil Nadu state is actively implementing one-third women reservation in all categories with its latest in the judiciary which has only woman subordinate Judges filling the reservation.

The Madras High Court has inducted four woman additional judges on Friday making it to 11 woman Judges in the state. Delhi HC has 10 woman Judges while Bombay High Court has nine Judges and Allahabad High Court has six women judges.

The sanctioned strength of Madras high court is 75, but currently, the HC has only 60 judges.
Out of the six new sworn judges on Friday, four judges were woman — Justice S Ramathilagam, Justice R Tharani, Justice T Krishnavalli and Justice R Hemalatha. The Judges were sworn in by Chief Justice Indira Banerjee.

The Madras High Court already had Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and six other women judges —Justice S Vimala, Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana, Justice VM Velumani, Justice J Nisha Banu, Justice Anita Sumanth and Justice V Bhavani Subbaroyan.

Another senior district Judge who had been earlier recommended by HC was among the six elected woman candidates but her name was later delinked from the list in view of pending case.

The SC collegium directed the high court to submit a status report on this matter which turns out the pending case is concluded in her favor. The HC has forwarded its recent report to the apex court as reported in Times of India.
