TN handloom exhibition-cum-sale opens in city

T.N. Venkatesh, Director of Handlooms and Textiles, Tamil Nadu on Friday inaugurated Tamil Nadu Handloom Exhibition-cum-sale 2015, at Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), West Marredpally, Secunderabad while Dr Preeti Meena, Director of Handlooms and Textiles, Telangana State, ignited Kuthuvilakku.

The exhibition, being organized by the department of Handlooms and Textiles of Tamil Nadu will last till May 10. Special discount from 10% to 50% will be given for select varieties. In the Exhibition, Handloom sarees of various varieties such as silk sarees from Kancheepuram, Arani, Salem and Thirubuvanam and soft silk sarees of Coimbathore, new designs of cotton sarees from Coimbathore, Tiruppur, Paramakudi, Dindigal and bedsheets, towels, blankets and home furnishings from Erode, Chennimalai and Bhavani areas are exhibited for sale.

It may be mentioned here that Tamil Nadu is a prominent State in Handloom Sector, having 2.5 lakh Handloom weavers. There are 1,300 Handloom Weavers Cooperative Societies producing exquisite, traditional and contemporary varieties which are rarest form of Handloom woven fabrics in the Country. Tamil Nadu, besides, standing as No. 1 in the Textiles Industry also contributes considerable revenue to the State and national economy and provides employment to the rural and urban people in the State.

With a view to showcase the handloom products under one roof and to widen the market base of the Tamil Nadu handlooms, Exhibitions are being conducted in five metropolitan cities in the country, i.e. New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai Hyderabad and Bengaluru. (NSS)
