TN farmer ends life over ‘crop failure’

Erode: A 59-year old turmeric farmer allegedly committed suicide as he was upset over crop failure in the district, police said today.

K P Ramalingam of Karattupalayam in Kodumudi Taluk allegedly consumed a pesticide used in turmeric crop last evening and died at a hospital here around midnight.

The farmer’s relatives and leaders of a local farmers association demanded Rs 30 lakh compensation and a government job for a member of the family.

Selvakumar of the association claimed that Ramalingam chose to end his life because turmeric crop raised by him and his son-in-law started withering due to non-availability of water.

This is the third death of a farmer this month in the state allegedly over crop failure. On November 3, a farmer of Tiruvarur district reportedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide. The next day another farmer from the same district, depressed over crop failure, collapsed suddenly when he was inspecting his farm and died.
