Hyderabad, may 18: The temple town of Tirupati has now joined the environment-friendly bandwagon.
The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has decided to offer prasadam in biodegradable bags instead of plastic bags.
The TTD in a landmark decision recently banned the packaging of laddus in plastic bags. It then called for tenders from across the country for supply of biodegradable bags.
Greendiamz Biotech Ltd on Monday said it won the contract from the TTD to supply 25 lakh bio-degradable bags in a competitive bidding process.
According to Greendiamz, these bags are made of its proprietary ‘TrueGreen’ biodegradable film every month.
They are manufactured using a 30-micron thick material and are not affected by ghee, oil or moisture.
They get decomposed within 180 days after coming in contact with soil. Dipack Sangghvi, director, Greendiamz Biotech Ltd said, “It gives us immense honour and pleasure to work with the TTD. This would be our service to all devotees and contribute in a small way to keep it environment- friendly.”
According to Greendiamz, it has been doing extensive research and development for over a year.
Their products have been tested and certified by European Standard EN 13432 and other organisations like CIPET (Chennai), Indian Institute of packaging (Mumbai) and BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards).
More than 50,000 devotees visit Tirumala daily, while the number crosses over a lakh during weekends.
The company said usage of these bags would have a huge impact by reducing the use of plastic bags.
