Tilting four-storey building in Bengaluru creates panic

Bengaluru: A four-storey building started tilting when the adjacent vacant site was being dug up to construct a basement on Wednesday, creating panic among the residents of Kempapura in north Bengaluru.

Residents of the building evacuated and the fire control room and the BBMP were alerted. The building has 36 residents, five floors with three houses on each floor.

Saying that there was no sign of building bylaw violations, officials of the BBMP claimed that the excavation work on the adjacent site led to the tilt. The technical experts’ team is analysing the situation.

Meanwhile, digging work has been stopped. However, tension prevails among residents of neighbouring buildings as the building in the narrow lane stands dangerously tilted towards the road. Residents of neighbouring buildings left their residences fearing that the building may fall on their houses.

Though they vacated the building, residents are worried about their belongings which they could not collect. A resident named Tulsi said, “One resident went up to at least bring his clothes. But by the time he went up, he felt the staircase shaking. He ran down horrified.”

According to Rahul alias Suresh Chandra Jain, owner of the house, the JCB which hit the pillar of the house while digging caused the mishap.
