Tight security for Rushdie’s arrival

Tight security arrangements are in place to prevent any trouble during the visit of Salman Rushdie, the controversial author of ‘The Satanic Verses’, police said today.

Rushdie is set to take part in the two-day India Today Conclave starting today at a five-star hotel here, barely two months after he had to cancel his visit to the Jaipur Literature Festival due to threats.

“We have deputed proper security to avoid any trouble,” a police official told IANS. He declined to give details.

Rushdie is scheduled to speak at the conclave.

The Man Booker prize winner earlier visited India in 2000 for a Commonwealth writers’ forum, and the Jaipur Literature Festival in 2007.

In Jaipur, several Muslim groups protested his participation at the literary festival, leading to cancellation of his visit.
