Tiger reserves to remain open for tourists

New Delhi, May 05: Government today ruled out any plan for banning tourism in tiger reserves in the country.

“There is no intention in the government to stop tourism at tiger reserves. There is no such plan or proposal,” said a senior Tourism Ministry official.

Some media reports had said that the government was planning to stop tourism activities in the country’s tiger reserves to protect the big cat.

However, the official said, “Tourism at some reserves needs to be better regulated as revenues generated from visitors can flow back directly into the management of each of the tiger reserves.”

According to the official, the government’s policy is to develop a set of guidelines for eco-tourism in a sustainable way, linked to the carrying capacity of the reserves.
