Tiff over Re 1 leads to suicide

Hyderabad, March 24: A tiff over one rupee with a grocer that later led to an attack, drove a woman to suicide out of humiliation at Moinabad on Tuesday night.

Police said T Venkatamma (35), a resident of Kanakamamidi, made a phone call from a coin box at a kirana store in the village. Later, she asked the store owner, J Vantiha, to give her back one rupee as she gave two rupees but made a single call. Vanitha, however, insisted that Venkatamma gave her only Re 1 coin. A heated argument ensued between the two that later turned into a scuffle.

Later in the night, Vanitha along with her husband, Venkataiah, and other family members went to Venkatamma’s house and picked up an argument and even reportedly assaulted her. Immediately, Venkatamma ran inside the house and set herself ablaze after dousing herself with kerosene. Venkatamma was shifted to the Osmania General hospital where she died while undergoing treatment. A case under Section 306 (abetment to commit suicide) was registered against Vanitha, Venkataiah and others. The accused are absconding.
