Geneva [Switzerland]: Over a thousand Tibetans, living in Europe, gathered outside the United Nations in Geneva to protest against the Chinese government, urging the organisation to send a fact-finding mission to Tibet.
“This time, we are organising March 10, 1959, commemoration day with all Tibetans in Europe. The situation in Tibet is very bad as there is no religious freedom and human rights are suppressed that’s why we are knocking at the United Nations’ door,” Pema Tsering Lhaning, Vice President of the Tibetan Community in Switzerland, told ANI.
“We are demanding genuine autonomy for Tibet from China,” he added.
Members from half a dozen European countries joined the protest to demand China stop atrocities in Tibet.
Speaking to ANI, Thomas Buchli, President of the Swiss Tibetan Friendship Association, said, “The UN should send a special repertoire to look into the human rights situation in Tibet. China has already accepted the visit of UN repertoire. But it didn’t happen, so we want the UN to send it now.”
‘Free Tibet’ slogans were also raised during the 59th Tibetan National Uprising Day.
“Our message for the UN is, no more silence because they are aware of the problem that Tibet is facing,” said Thubten Wangchen, Europe Director, Tibetan Parliament in exile. “The UN is under economic pressure from China. We urge the UN to speak and tell the truth to the world that Tibet is burning, it’s dying.” (ANI)
