Three persons from TN arrested in Delhi

New Delhi, January 09:Three persons from Tamil Nadu, who allegedly stole Rs 32,000 from a passenger at New Delhi Railway Station to celebrate Pongal festival, were arrested in the national capital, police said today.

The arrested have been identified as D Suresh (27), Shanmughan (30) and Madhusudhanan (35). They were arrested from near New Delhi Railway Station yesterday while trying to flee with a passenger’s bag, a senior police official said.

“Initially the trio pretended as if they do not know Hindi or English. However, later they confessed to the crime and told police that they did this crime to celebrate Pongal festival,” the official said.

Pongal, a harvest festival celebrated by Tamils in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka, coincides with the festival Makara Sankranthi. Pongal in Tamil means “boiling over or spillover.”

The trio were allegedly involved in similar crimes earlier. They used to divert the attention of passengers andused to steal their belongings.

“Yesterday, the trio approached a passenger boarding a taxi and told him that some money was lying down.

The passenger then asked the driver to check. However, one of three arrested managed to divert his attention. One of themsuddenly started fleeing with his bag,” the official said.

The passenger chased them and raised alarm and police personnel overpowered the trio.
