A shooting at condominium complex east of the University of North Carolina campus in Chapel Hill in the US killed three Muslim students.
The victims were: Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23; Yusor Mohammad, 21; and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19 and all three had been shot in the head.
According to reports, Barakat and Yusor had only just been married just a couple of months ago and his wife was a second year student at the dental school at the University. Abu-Salha was her sister.
The accused,Craig Stephen Hicks of Chapel Hill was detained and charged with three counts of first-degree murder. He is being held at the Durham County Jail.
Officers further said that there was ‘reason to believe that there is no ongoing threat to the public’.
In response to the shooting, new hashtag #MuslimLivesMatter started to trend on Twitter with many posting what they said were photos of the victims.
The shooting happened shortly 5.15 pm on Tuesday but the first reports emerged around eight hours ago.
The US media has been accused of ‘silence’ for what was perceived as a lack of coverage of the shootings.
