Three more deer die; toll rises to 14

Karimnagar, April 04: Three more fawn in Karimnagar Deer Park died due to foot and mouth (Aphtae epizooticae) disease taking the toll to 14. The Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad has confirmed that footandmouth disease claimed lives of 11 deer, which died three days ago.

Speaking to this paper, Karimnagar division forest officer (DFO) Priyanka Verghese said the dead animals included six adult Nilgais and seven fawn.

Dr Yashpal Singh and Dr Rasheed of Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad, are monitoring the animals daily. They are being assisted by two local veterinary doctors.

In a bid to check spread of the airborne disease, each of the 60 deer in the park have been kept in isolation, Verghese said. However, nearly 50 more animals in the park are showing symptoms of the disease.

The DFO said that they were burying the animals after post mortem to check spread of the disease.

“We are following all suggestions of doctors from the Nehru Zoological Park,” she said, adding that they were keeping bananas and other medicines available in the place.

In view of the soaring temperature, the animals are being protected with special screens to guard the sick animals from heat, Priyanka added.
