New Delhi, June 09: Three army soldiers, who were part of a mountaineering expedition, died today morning after falling ill due to cold and adverse weather conditions while returning from Mount Trishul in Garhwal.
The team had successfully scaled the peak on the night of 07/08 June and while returning, the team encountered extreme weather conditions in the form of unseasonal heavy snowfall and blizzards for almost 24 hours, officials said here.
“While descending back to base camp, Havaldar Thandraj Rai, Naik Chandra Bahadur Limbu and Naik Nima Wandi Sharpa fell critically ill and succumbed to cold injuries,” an official said.
The expedition to Mount Trishul (7120 meters) was flagged off on May 15 last month.
The team from the 11 Gorkha Rifles Regimental Centre was led by Major K S Rajawat, who has led a number of expeditions in the recent past, and had two officers, two junior commissioned officers and 27 other ranks.
