Three held with ancient silver coins worth Rs 23 lakh

Varanasi, August 20: Three persons were arrested from Chetganj area here with over 7,500 British period silver coins worth over Rs 23 lakhs seized from them, police said today. Superintendent of Police (City) Vijay Bhushan, said that over 7,500 ancient silver coins weighing 68.3 kg dating back to 1861 and 1892 were recovered from three men who were arrested last night.

He said that Rajesh Singh, Aditya Sharan and Mukesh Mishra were nabbed with coins on Wednesday night from Chetganj locality under Chetganj police station of Varanasi, where they had brought it from Deoria district of Eastern UP for selling them. He said that the arrested persons have told police that they got the coins from the digging of their ancestral house in Deoria.

The coins have symbols of Queen Victoria and King George V of Britain
