Three cops suspended, Home Guard faces action in assault case

Three constables were today suspended and disciplinary action was initiated against a Home Guard for allegedly assaulting four persons, including an NRI, at Musheerabad Police Station here on June 25, police said on Tuesday.

During a preliminary inquiry, constables — M Hanumantha Rao, K Narayana, K Rajender and Home Guard K Suresh Kumar — were found involved in assault of the Ireland-based NRI Mallampuram Vasu and three of his friends, Preetham, Nirish and Nitin, police said in a release.

The officers were found indulged in high-handed behaviour and tarnishing the image of the police force, it stated.

“The police personnel beat them up with fibre lathis and hands and caused severe bruise injuries to Vasu and minor injuries to others. Hence, the three constables were placed under suspension with immediate effect, while disciplinary action is being initiated against Home Guard for his removal from rolls,” the release said.

Similarly, V Sampath, Sub-Inspector of Musheerabad Police Station, is attached to Central Armed Reserve Headquarters with immediate effect pending enquiry, they said.

According to the police, the victim students were allegedly found in a heavily drunken state and creating nuisance near a hospital in Musheerabad area on June 25.

The accused personnel reached the spot and advised them to leave the place, upon which both the groups pick up an argument. The youths were forcibly taken into custody and brought to Musheerabad Police Station, it said.

After reaching the police station, they continued arguing with the police and questioned the police action.

Enraged by their behaviour, the police personnel allegedly beat them up. The youths were also tested positive with blood alcohol content (BAC), police said.
